ANTARCTIC SOCIETY
Peter Scott Given Tie
Mr Peter Scott, noted British naturalist, can now wear what he described humourously last evening as an “ornithological abnormality”—a New Zealand Antarctic Society tie. This tie has a small design of kiwis and penguins on a dark blue ground. Mr H. F. Griffiths, president of the Canterbury branch of the society, presented the tie to Mr Scott when he and the other members of a 8.8. C. television team, Messrs A. C. Railing and C. Lagus, were entertained by the branch last evening. Mr Griffiths spoke of Mr Scott’s achievements as a naturalist, artist, and television commentator, and said that members of the society welcomed him particularly as the son of a famous Antarctic explorer. When Mr Griffiths expressed the hope that Mr Scott would wear the tie on occasions, Mr Scott promptly removed his Wildfowl Trust tie, and put on his new tie. He wore it for the rest of the evening. During the evening Mr Scott met the only three survivors in New Zealand of the crew of the Terra Nova during his father’s last expedition to the Antarctic. They were Messrs W. Burton and W. McDonald (Christchurch), and M. McCarthy (Lyttelton).
Mr Scott and the other members of the 8.8. C. team will fly to McMurdo Sound tomorrow. Yesterday Mr Scott visited 14 Kinsey terrace, Sumner, where his parents stayed for about four weeks before Captain Scott sailed from Lyttelton, Now owned by Mr D. B. Robertson, the house was then the property of Sir Joseph Kinsey whose firm represented the expedition in New Zealand.
On Saturday Mr Scott visited Arthur’s Pass to observe keas. He went to the New Zealand gliding championships at Omarama on Saturday, and made a flight with Mr P. O’Connor, president of the Canterbury Gliding Club.
