N.Y. Strike Continues
IJV Z Press Assn.— Copyright) NEW YORK, Jan. 10. Negotiations were carried on into the early hours of the morning today in an effort to settle New York’s costly and crippling transport strike.
Both sides in the dispute,! I which has tied up the city’s vast transport system since I January 1. met with medi-i ators and the Mayor of Newj (York. Mr John Lindsay in an jattempt to reach agreement! on the transport workers’ de- j mands. However, there were no reports of any progress. The strikers want more pay and pensions, shorter hours and other fringe benefits. As the strike entered its tenth day today, millions of workers were faced with a | second week of traffic chaos ; and personal frustration. j ;! Since it takes an estimated j II eight to 12 hours to get the • lundergroundIunderground system back into! full working order, even ai -isettlement in the early hours! • of this morning would have i come too late to get the trains! .!running in tune for the back-, ; to-work rush. I I Most buses, however, could; 11be back on the streets within! fan hour or two.
The protracted bargaining session, with the Mayor meeting the two sides separately and later jointly, appeared to indicate that the going was tough. The exact status of the negotiation has remained a closely-guarded secret during the last few days. However, both sides are known to have modified their positions, which at the end of
last week involved a 180 million dollar claim by the union and a 25 million dollar count-er-offer from the Transit Authority. One of the biggest headaches facing the city and the Mayor, who took office the day the strike started, is where the money is to be found without raising the present flat 15 cent bus an . train fare.
The transport union is making final preparations for a mass demonstration outside the City Hall later today in support of its demands. Police and traffic authorities worked through the night to complete new plans for coping with the heavy stream of private cars again flooding into the city today.
