Factory Damaged By Fire
A fire in the Fuller Clothing Company’s Lawson street factory last night caused moderate damage to part of the building and its contents. The blaze was noticed in the last hour of daylight and when the brigade arrived it had a good hold. The seat of the fire is thought to have been a bin of partly-manufactured overalls. The fire from there spread up the wall and halfway across the ceiling of the 50ft wide building. The company had moved into the building only a week before Christmas after having had the interior of the part it occupied redecorated. No assessment of the total damage was available last night. The building is owned by the Sydenham Rugby Football Club and the club occupies the rear of the premises. No I damage was done to the club’s part of the building. One machine from headquarters and one from St. Albans answered the call, which was received at 17.52 p.m. Police Inquiries Police are investigating two other fires which broke out in Christchurch yesterday. One occurred in a vacant house at 30 Hillview terrace about 6 a.m. The rear of the building was seriously damaged. The property belongs to Mr Joseph Andrew, of 26A Whitmore street. Two machI ines from headquarters 'attended the fire. The other fire which the police are investigating occurred in a hedge which divides Spreydon Park froni| houses in Domain terrace.
The fire destroyed about 60ft of the hedge at the rear of 21 and 25 Domain terrace, and also slightly damaged a section of the City Football Club’s building to which it had spread. One machine from Sydenham and one from headquarters attended the fire, the call being received at 2.13 p.m.
A small sulphur fire in an elevator at Kempthorne Prosser and Company’s works on Main South road about 12.33 p.m. yesterday did little damage. One machine from headquarters and one from Sockburn attended the fire. An oven fire at 224 A Wainoni road was extinguished by using a carbon dioxide extinguisher. The fire did no damage. Two machines from New Brighton answered the call which was received at 1.58 p.m.
One machine from St. Albans attended a chimney fire at 35 Cranford street at 7.47 p.m. The fire did no damage.
