Six Road Deaths On Saturday
Six died as a result of accidents on the roads on Saturday, the Press Association reports.
Two were killed in Christchurch in an accident in Park terrace, a woman was killed when a car skidded on a corner near Wanganui and two men, one a bystander, died after two cars collided on the highway near Thames.
The men killed in an accident on the Auckland-Thames Highway at 10.30 a.m. on Saturday were:—
James Darwin Middleton, aged 48, married, a storekeeper and tanker driver, of Kerepehi; William Terrence Westbury, aged 18, single, a cash register mechanic, of Te Awamutu.
Two men were injured. K. G. Jamison, aged 18, a carpenter, of Te Awamutu, a passenger in the car driven by Mr Westbury, was admitted to Thames Hospital badly hurt. His condition tonight was critical. The driver of the other car. Sergeant J. D. Robertson, of Linton Military Camp, was also admitted to hospital with a broken leg. He is in a satisfactory condition. The accident occurred on the Thames side of the turn-off to Kaihere. A milk tanker travelling toward Auckland became bogged in a shallow drain while turning into a farm.
Mr Middleton, who was driving another tanker, stopped to give assistance. While he was standing at the rear of his vehicle waiting to cross the road, two cars collided head on. One of the cars was swung around, crushing Mr Middleton and killing him instantly. Woman Killed
A Wanganui woman was killed and her daughter seriously injured when their car somersaulted on the Marangai Hill, four miles south of Wanganui, on Saturday afternoon.
The woman killed was Delys Mary McLay, aged 34, married, of 27 Armstrong place. Wanganui.
Her 11-year-old daughter, Nisa Diane McLay, was dangerously ill with head injuries
in the Wanganui Hospital tonight. A third occupant of the car, Mrs Jean Anne Walsh, aged 28, of 66 Jones avenue, Wanganui, suffered minor cuts and bruises. Her condition tonight was satisfactory. Died In Hospital A woman died after a collision on the New PlymouthHamilton highway on Saturday. Her husband was injured in the accident. The dead woman was: Hera Kamaru, aged 56, 20 Miro street Manunui.
Mrs Kamaru was in the front seat of a car driven by her husband, Tepene Kamaru. The accident occurred four miles and a half north of Mahoenui when two cars, travel-
ling in opposite directions, collided at about 2 p.m. The driver of the second car, which was towing a caravan, was James Phillip Mackay, aged 36, of Braeside Camp, Tokoroa. Both Mr and Mrs Kamaru were taken to the Te Kuiti Hospital, where Mrs Kamaru died minutes after being admitted. Head Injuries Barry Owen Moore, aged 18, of 14 Kea street, Hamilton, suffered head injuries when the car he was driving hit a telegraph pole in Waiiti road, near Morgans road, about 6.50 a.m. on Sunday.
Moore was taken to Timaru Hospital. He is in a satisfactory condition.
