Two Die After Car Hits Pole
Two young Christchurch men died after the car in which they were passengers struck a telegraph pole at the corner of Peterborough street and Park terrace about 3.25 p.m. on Saturday. One died immediately, and the other died in hospital about 5 a.m. yesterday.
They were: William Ivor Evans, aged 23, of 166 Kilmore street, and
Maurice John Ireland, aged 20, of 65 Harrow street, who died yesterday.
Three others in the car were injured. Alan Philip Paton, of 73 Palmers road, suffered head injuries. His condition is fairly satisfactory. He is believed to have been the driver. Kenneth Ray Townsend, of 477 Ferry road, suffered head and arm injuries. His condition is satisfactory. Brian Thomas Alcock, of 47 Mackworth street, suffered head, arm, and leg injuries. His condition is fairly satisfactory. A student nurse, Miss Mary
Hogg, aged 20, saw the accident happen, and gave first aid. She was cycling in Park terrace when the car, a 1956 model, hit the pole on the northern corner of Peterborough street. Glass from the windscreen was scattered for more than 25 yards. The left front of the car took the force of the impact. The left front wheel and front suspension were pushed back about 18 inches, the flooring and dashboard on the passenger’s side were pushed back, and the front of the roof, above the windscreen, was badly crumpled. The injured were taken to the Christchurch Hospital in two ambulances.
The police ask that any other persons who saw the accident should get in touch with the motor accidents branch at the Central Police Station.
