General Gilbert By Half A Head
(From Our Own Reporter)
GREYMOUTH.
General Gilbert repeated his last year’s performance by winning the Kumara Handicap, principal race on the Kumara Racing Club’s programme at its annual meeting.
He was fully extended by Morris Francis, however, to get the decision by half a head.
General Gilbert is a six year I old chestnut gelding by Advocate General from Ramona, owned by Messrs J. L. Barr and W. R. Woodham, and trained by Barr at Riccarton. The second leg was won by Kummel, a five-year-old chestnut mare by Red Marlin from Glem Hath owned by Messrs G. J. Arnott and R. W. Inglis, of Greymouth and trained for them at Omoto by A. T. Campbell. The doubles dividend was £64 18s for £l.
The meeting was held in fine sunny weather and there was a good attendance. Oncourse investments totalled £20,307 10s, including £2189 on the double, compared with £19,012 10s on the corresponding day last year. Unlucky Vivien Robe and Wester were unlucky runners in the Kumara Handicap. Vivien Robe missed the jump-out to be last going out of the straight. Wester’received a cheek at the half mile. His Host was smartest to begin and he held his lead to the ve furlongs. He was followed over the first 'half mile by Waitohi, Deladana, Rae’s Hope, Wester, General Gilbert, and Vivien Robe. Waitohi moved into the lead with about three furlongs to run and she led into the straight from His Host. General Gilbert, Morris Francis, Wester, and Vivien Robe. General Gilbert and Morris Francis had a great tussle over the last 100 yards, the former just holding off a very strong challenge by half a head. Wester finished fast for third a length away, with Vivien Robe half a length back. Then came His Host, Rae’s Hope, Clipper, Waitohi, Deladana and White Skies. Second Leg
Kummel scored a convincing win the second leg after being slower than usual to find her feet.
Wai-iki began best and was followed to the two furlongs by Taxman, El Beka, Newbury, Chantenay, and Debbie Marie. Taxman then assumed control, with Kummel and Chantenay moving up, followed by [Debbie Marie and Wai-iki. I Kummel led round the home turn and ran on to win by a length from Taxman. Debbie Marie, which lost her chance through a slow beginning. was a head away third,! a length in front of El Beka ! The next to finish were Chan ! tenay, Wai-iki, Maguire's* Peter, Aoudo, Corneil, New-! bury and Cabalina.
