IN GOOD POSITION

Manawatu Scores 363

(N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH.

A magnificent 125 by the captain, J. Thomson, and 81 by the wicket-keeper, L. Downes, put Manawatu in an almost unassailable position on the second day of the Hawke Cup match against Marlborough in Palmerston North on Saturday.

The cup holder led by 236 runs on the first innings after compiling 363 in 477 minutes in reply to Marlborough’s firstinnings total of 127. Two partnerships of more than 70 runs for the fifth and eighth wickets boosted the Manawatu score. Downes and P. Wai din came together at the end of the first day when Manawatu was struggling for runs, being four wickets down for 57 runs. The pair carried Manawatu safely to within 23 runs of the Marlborough total before stumps. Marlborough began its second innings disastrously, losing its first wicket for only one run. However, W. Garrod and S. Lane had mustered a respectable score by stumps. Scores:

Marlborough 127 and 24 for one; Manawatu 363 (Thomson 125, Downes 81; L. Sparks four for 42).
