Yuile Nine Wickets; Canterbury On Top

(New Zealand Press Association)

NEW PLYMOUTH.

Canterbury, holder of the Plunket Shield and leader in the. present competition, was well placed after the second day of its match against Central Districts at Pukekura Park, New Plymouth, on Saturday.

It took a first innings lead of 133 and added a further 23 runs without loss in its second innings.

With brisk scoring this morning, on the final day, Canterbury should have the chance of declaring and trying for an outright win.

The outstanding features of Canterbury’s innings were the nine wickets taken by the leftarm spinner, B. W. Yuile, and the seventh-wicket partnership between J. W. Burtt and G .A. Bartlett, which added 106 runs in 91 minutes, including 66 in 44 minutes on Saturday morning. Follow-on Avaided

The Canterbury bowlers gained almost complete dominance over the Central Districts batsmen, the left-arm spinner, J. M. Mclntyre, and G. A. Bartlett being particularly accurate.

The one batsman to hold out was D. A. Kinsella, who included five fours in his 25 and was mainly responsible for Central avoiding the fol-low-on.

Burtt and Bartlett batted delightfully to establish Canterbury’s first innings. Bartlett was in complete command, taking 11 from one of R. 0. Collinge’s overs, and he completed his 50 in 72 minutes, with a four to square leg. His biggest hit was a straight drive for six off Yuile —but in the same over he was bowled. Perfect Length When Yuile wound up the Canterbury innings by bowling P. A. Sharp, he beer .re the first player to take nine wickets in Plunket Shield cricket since R. W. Blair, of Wellington, did it in the 195657 season. His wickets were obtained by maintaining an almost perfect length and by subtle changes of pace and flight.

When Central Districts batted, the openers, B. L. Hampton and B. E. Congdon, went along very steadily to 44 in 52 minutes before Bartlett bowled Hampton. From then on it was always a struggle—and a tedious one, too—until Kinsella came in. Kinsella had a fine time, and the crowd enjoyed every minute of it. He joined Collinge when Central still needed 11 runs to avoid the fol-low-on.

Chapple Injured The Central captain, M. E. Chapple did not take the field when Canterbury batted for

33 minutes before stumps. Chapple went to hospital for an X-ray of one of his fingers which had been struck by a ball from Bartlett. It was found that the finger was not fractured and Chapple should be avaiable today. Collinge did not bowl. He was still feeling the effect of an ankle injury, but it is hoped that he will be able to bowl today. CANTERBURY First Innings 11. R. Hartland, c CohMnge, b Yuile .. 27 IM. Ryan, b Collinge . 4 |K.
