From Practice On Farm To National Clout Title

A Matamata dairy farmer who has practised on his own ever since his local archery club closed several ago dommated the first day of die New Zealand archery championships at Lincoln College.

D. Dixon (Matamata) became men’s clout champion by the large margin of seven points and showed greater mastery of an awkward cross-breeze than any other competitor.

He also led the open target championship after the American round, the first target event. He shot a brilliant 728 in a possible 810 with his 90 arrows, into a head wind which blew gustily and upset the elevation of many of the archers.

Dixon showed no trace of

I nerves in making the vast leap from private practice to national championship level. D. McLaren (Taieri) was only one point behind Dixon in the American round, and his was also an exceptional performance. He first took up the sport 15 months ago but practises for four hours a day. Although he shot one arrow completely off the target, he was still only a point away at the finish. The reigning clout champion, W. Thomson (Howlck), was unable to gain one of the first five places. The cross breeze made it awkward for archers to judge the flight of the arrow and Dixon (272) and E. O’Halloran of Dunedin (265) were clearly the best of the field. Women’s Champion Mrs L. Arnott (Dunedin) dethroned the reigning women’s champion. Miss L. Lamberg (Rotorua), who was placed second. All the top ! women shot very well. New Zealand records were set in both men’s and women’s open flights, F. Green (Christchurch) with 585yds and Mrs V. Tetley (Mangere) with 499yds. J. Hincho (Mangere) who was third in the American Round, won the men’s limited flight while Mrs Tetley completed a good double by adding the limited flight to her open win. A York round was shot during the afternoon but galeforce winds prevented it from being completed. More than 100 archers, from all parts of New Zealand, have entered the tournament. Results are:—
