ADVICE OF ATTACK

Vietnamese Not Told

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SAIGON, January 9. Well-informed military sources said that the operation was kept secret from the South Vietnamese for fear of an intelligence leak. The operation began yesterday, but announcement of it by' the United States military authorities was withheld until this morning for that reason. The headquarters of the South Vietnamese Army’s 3rd Corps is known to be riddled with Viet Cong agents and for that reason word of the operation was confined to the Allies involved. It is believed to have been the first such operation kept secret from the Vietnamese command.
