New French Cabinet
(NZ. Press Assn—Copyright) PARIS, Jan. 9. President de Gaulle formally began his second seven-year term in office yesterday. The inauguration ceremony at the Elysee Palace was short and solemn. It lasted seven ; minutes and was attended by 1 fewer than 50 people. The President’s first act afterwards was to ask the Premier (Mr Pompidou) to remain at the head of the new Government
The new Cabinet list, officially announced in the afternoon, had been drawn up after days of intensive backstage power struggling among the President’s main supporters.
The most important changes were:
The return of the former Premier (Mr Debre), who will be Minister of Economy and Finance, with large specially-defined powers in all fields of economic endeavour. The departure of Mr Giscard Destaing, the former Finance Minister, whose austerity policies of price controls and tight credits were a political liability to President de Gaulle in last month’s elections.' Mr Debre is identified in the public mind with more “liberal" policies. The appointment of Mr Edgar Faure as Agriculture Minister. Mr Faure is a nonGaullist former Premier who is popular with many farm organisations which have criticised President de Gaulle’s policy on Europe. He is reported to be anxious to see the European agricultural market revived as soon as possible.
