“The Press” In 1866

January 10 PORT HILLS FIRE—On Monday evening the inhabitants of Lyttelton were startled out of their usual quietness by the loud and quick clanging of the fire bell, and on turning out it was seen that the tops of the hills to the west of Salt’s gully were in a blaze. The Bridlepath was soon crowded, a great number of the inhabitants walking up to have a nearer view of the scene. Great anxiety

was felt for the safety of the houses in Voelas road, as the fire was making down the gully that opens out into Dampier’s Bay; it also nearly crossed the Bridlepath at the head of Salt’s gully. Luckily the wind lulled, and the fury of the fire was stayed, and by twelve o’clock all anxiety ceased. The heat in Lyttelton has been intense and has been not a little increased by the smoke blown down from the fire on the hills.
