Coarse Wool Down At Wellington

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 7. The market for coarse grades at the Wellington wool sale today was distinctly in buyers’ favour compared with December closing rates. However, rates for finer wools and oddments were firm.

The offering comprised 25.000 bales of ewe fleece from Wairarapa and Masterton, with a good quantity from the Sounds. There was a small quantity of hogget wool. The offering opened up in generally good condition in spite of bad weather during shearing. Continental buyers were well to the fore in competition which brought brisk and animated bidding. Australian Safeway Pty., Ltd., a big supermarket operator, incurred a net loss of £138.296 in the year to October 2, compared with a loss of £184,962 in the previous 15 months. But the chairman (Mr G. E. Rudolph) says that sales increased by 42 per cent in the latest period. The company is owned by Safeways Stores Inc. of the United States, one of the biggest grocery chains in the world.
