With one round to go, the result of the International Chess Congress premier tournament at Hastings was still in the balance at the close of play yesterday. Boris Spassky (Soviet Union) and Wolfgang Uhlmann (East Germany) both had 6) points after eight rounds. Spassky will start with a great advantage in his final game because he is playing white against Werner Nicolai (West Germany), who has gained only half-a-point from eight games. Uhlmann, who will also be playing white, will have a formidable opponent Lt Florin Gheorghiu, the Rumanian grandmaster. The eighth round results were:

Nicolai lost here to W. Hartston (Britain), 32 moves, old Indian defence. S. Gligoric (Jugoslavia) drew with Spassky, 42 moves. Queen’s gambit declined; P Lee (Britain) drew with E Vasukov (Soviet Union), 37 moves. Sicilian defence; N. Littlewood (Britain) lost to Uhlmann, 28 moves, Grunfeld defence; Gheorghiu and H.
