CITED FOR CONTEMPT

Leaders Of K.K.K.

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, January 7. Robert Shelton, top man in the Ku Klux Klan, and six other leaders have been cited for contempt of Congress. No reason was given for the decision. Shelton, imperial wizard of the United Klans of America, and the others appeared before a House of Representative sub-committee on unAmerican activities, which is investigating the klan’s activities.

Throughout the hearings Shelton and the others repeatedly refused to answer questions, citing the fifth amendment to the Constitution, which protects people from incriminating themselves. Before the seven are formally indicted the citing must be referred to the full committee. Then this must be acted upon by the House.
