REPAIRS TO CHIMNEYS
Complaints To Police Four old-age pensioners in Sydenham have complained to the Sydenham police about chimney repairs made by two men. In each instance, the men approached the pensioner and said that the chimney was in danger of coming down and required bracing inside. They removed bricks from the top of the chimneys, left them on the ground, and placed the chimney pots back without fixing them. No braces were put in the chimneys. Each pensioner paid cash. None of the pensioners was fit enough to- go on to the roof to inspect the work. Miss R. G. Gasson, aged 65, of Brougham street, paid £lB ss, Mrs Dorothy Walker, aged 70, £lO 15s, Mr R. Fraser, .aged 79, £l5 17s 6d, and Mrs M. Le Comte, aged 84, £25. The latter three live in Montreal street. More complaints about chimney repairs, believed to have’been carried out by the same two men, have been made by elderly persons in other parts of the city. Detectives from the Central Police Station are now inquiring into the complaints. The police consider that, as it seems the men involved are concentrating on elderly persons of limited means, the public should know of the complaints.
