DEATH IN ORANJE
Polio Virus Isolated (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 16. A virus which appears to be the epidemic type of poliomyelitis has been isolated at the National Health institute from specimens obtained from a passenger who died in the liner Oranje last week. Any chance of an outbreak of the disease as a result of this isolated case was remote since 80 per cent of the population was immunised against it, the medical officer of health at Wellington (Dr. E. H. Dowden) said today. Captain C. Beadle, a 29-year-old British Army officer, died the day before the ship berthed at Wellington and was buried here.
Dr. W. Hamilton, virologist at the institute, isolated the virus. He said today that before he could make a definite diagnosis, more of the virus had to be grown, but it seemed, at this stage, to be poliomyelitis. All the passengers disembarking at New Zealand were given oral vaccine before leaving the vessel.
