COMMUNISTS IN UNIONS

Labour Party

Attack

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, June 16.

The State Australian Labour Party conference yesterday adqpted a plan aimed at fighting Communist influence in the trade unions.

The plan calls for an official party statement at the time of a union election on whether all candidates on the A.L.P. ticket are bona fide members of the party. Left-wing delegates at the conference claimed that the decision was in direct conflict with the federal policy of the party. Supporters of the move saw in it the basis of full-scale warfare against Communists in the union.

They said party officials showed great courage in submitting such a revolutionary plan to a conference made up mainly of trade union delegates. Right-wing controllers of the party in NS.W. were, determined to fight with the Communists and in the process improve Labour’s electoral prospects, they said. A bitter fight was anticipated when the N.S.W. decision comes before the federal A.L.P. executive. Delegates from Victoria, Queensland, and Western Australia are expected to oppose the N.S.W. plan.
