Obituary
MR WILLIAM BA VERSTOCK The death occurred in Christchurch yesterday of Mr William Baverstock, who for 32 years was a lithographer With “The Press.” He was 98. Mr Baverstock was born in London in 1866. He became an office boy to an estate agent in Preston, Lancashire, and later became apprenticed as a lithographer. He moved to Norwich to learn more about colour printing and after he had been there some years was
asked, in 1901, to come to New Zealand and join the lithographic department of “The Press.” Mr Baverstock later took charge of the department and remained there for 32 years until the lithographic department was closed. He then went to the printing department of Whitcombe and Tombs,- Ltd;, where he remained until his retirement seven years later. He was an artist of considerable- merit in both water colour and pencil, and was a photographer and designer. For some years he made his own Christmas cards, small reproductions of his watercolours of New Zealand scenes, for his relatives in England. He also designed and made most of the furniture in his home at 40 Berwick street.
As a chorister Mr .Baverstock sang with the St. Matthew’s Church choir for. 30 years and with the Royal Musical Society, of which he was an honorary member. During the war he worked for a number of voluntary brganisations. He hand-letter-ed long London addresses and descriptions of contents on more than 700 cases of clothing for the Lady Galway Guild. He is survived by two sons, Mr W. S. Baverstock, who is now director of the Robert McDougall Art Gallery, and Mr H. S. Baverstock, who retired from the staff of the Christchurch Boys’ High School in 1952.
