STILL A SKILFUL PLAYER
rpHE Linwood senior Rugby team is fortunate to have a player of the standard of J. A. Dawson among its reserves. Playing at halfback against New Brighton on Saturday he exerted a considerable influence on the trend of the game with his immaculate passes, clever blind-side work and alertness in starting play from break-downs. He was a more impressive figure than his marker, G. A. Stanley, although the former Canterbury representative is still showing the effects of his cartilage operation. Dawson is not as quick on the break as Linwood’s regular half-back, K. Fraser, but his cool efficiency—stemming from the experience of more than 30 firstclass matches—is equally valuable. Dawson has played representative Rugby for
Southland, West Coast and Wellington B, participated in two All Black trials in 1959, and has been the New Zealand Police team’s regular half-back for the last five years. An accurate short range goal-kicker, he once took the shots at goal in a Southland-Otago match.
