Referee In Rhodesia
'A SENIOR reserve referee - r *- in Christchurch, Mr Guy Cornish, is now one of the top seven referees in Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia. Mr Cornish, a Christchurch man, is in Salisbury on a business trip for his firm, W. D. and H. O. Wills, and while there decided to referee in his spare time. In a letter to a Christchurch friend, Mr H. W. McCoubrey, he said “the standard of senior Rugby is not as high as in Christchurch but it only has half the white population.” “However, they take it very seriously, are very fit and play a fast, open game—excellent to referee; but I must say I am usually done at the end.” He met four of the Springboks (which players he did not say) in the Transvaal team, and thinks he will meet them in New Zealand next year. Mr Cornish writes: “They are hard blokes to get to know but good sorts when you know them for a while.” He added that he met “the great Craven,” who was in Salisbury to welcome the International Rugby Board. Dr. D. H. Craven, the president of the South African Rugby Board, watched Mr Cornish referee in a match and commented very favourably on his control. Mr Cornish, who arrived in Rhodesia on February 14, will return to New Zealand in August.
