Association Seeks Assurance
The Canterbury Yachting Association will oppose interference with the Estuary by any means in its power, unless it receives an assurance from the Christchurch Drainage Board that the interests of yachtsmen will be protected. A motion to this effect was passed unanimously by the association last night, after delegates had voiced their support for Mr Beanland’s statement.
Mr C. Vincent (Waimakariri Sailing Club) said it appeared that the yachtsmen of Canterbury would- have to speak as one voice in the matter, and Mr H. L. England (Christchurch Yacht Club) said the board should be left in no doubt that the association was not happy with the scheme, because it conflicted with yachting interests. The board had. said its interests lay in drainage and not in aquatic sports or beautification, he-added.
Mr G. I. F. Treleavan (Banks Peninsula Cruising Club) expressed the belief that the board would tell the association it had nothing decided in regard to the Estuary proposal. Two firms of consultants were engaged in collecting information, and this would have to be sent to England. “I think it will be about two years before any report is brought down," he said. The motion, which was presented by Mr J. R. Milligan (Akaroa Boating Club), was: “This association is vitally interested in the future of the Estuary and views with alarm the proposals of the Christchurch Drainage Board. Unless an assurance is given that the interests of yachtsmen will be protected it will oppose, by any means in its power, interference with the Estuary.”
