ARBOR DAY PLANS

South Malvern Schools Children from Glentunnel, Homebush and South “Malvern schools are expected to plant at least 200 trees on Arbor Day, August 4. Mr P. J. Allen, secretary of the South Malvern district schools’ endowment plantation scheme, reported this at the recent annual meeting of the joint committee of the scheme. The trees to be planted are 85 radiata pines, 100 Oregon pines, 10 red beech and five black poplars. The meeting decided to plant a totara tree as a memorial to the late Mr J. Deans, in tribute to his work and interest in the plantation. Some of the radiata had been slow in growing, and some Oregon pines had been lost, said the chairman, Mr E. Karst. This was a result of the extremely dry conditions during the last two growing seasons. Greater efforts in blanking-up should be made this year, he said. A large amount of broom which was crowding the young trees had been cleared by working parties in the last season. Some of the blackberry, which was sprayed in November, had been killed. The committee planned to continue with- work of that nature. The committee re-elected Mr E. Karst as chairman and Mr P. J. Allen as secretarytreasurer.
