NEW LIDO POOL
Centre Seeks Extension
The Canterbury centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association asked the City Council to extend the proposed lido pool at Waltham Park to international standard as a move to encourage the holding of the Empire Games in Christchurch. The centre said that although the Centennial Pool was suitable for international competition, it fell short in spectator accommodation, as seating for at least 5000 would be necessary. “The Centennial Pool meets the requirements for international competition,” the baths committee said. “Should the Empire Games be allocated to Christchurch at some future date, it is considered that the new stand at present being erected, with its seating capacity of about 2000, together with temporary stands that could be erected both at the learners’ pool and the Oxford terrace side of the pool, could easily cater for a crowd of 5000.” Cr. H. G. Hay, chairman of the committee, agreed to discuss the proposal with the centre.
