DUNEDIN, June 15. In the event of another war, H.M.N.Z.S. Otago could engage any other ship of a comparable size and emerge the victor, the commander of the frigate, Captain E. C. Thorne said in Dunedin today.
When the Otago was based in Singapore last year with the British . Far East fleet, her anti-submarine apparatus and sea-to-air missiles made her the most up-to-date striking force in the fleet, he said. When asked whether the rapid turnover of crew (85 per cent this year) made any difference to the efficiency of the ship, Captain Thorne said, no.
To illustrate this, he said in a recent operation, the Otago’s new gunnery crew had hit a surface target at 8.5 miles with- the third shot. The New Zealand seaman I was probably superior to. any other in the world and this|
was the reason for the “team spirit” and high efficiency of the Otago, he said.
