APPEAL FOR HELP
Rehabilitation Of Prisoners
The Superintendent of Paparua Prison (Mr E; P. Cahill) on Monday urged Canterbury manufacturers to help with the rehabilitation of prisoners by finding them jobs. Addressing the Canterbury Manufacturers’ . Association council, Mr Cahill said that from 500 to 1000 prisoners being discharged in this area each year required jobs. Noone in the community, he said, could escape some responsibility for the fact that there were prisons.
Mr Cahill asked that some members of the association become visitors to Paparua, each taking a particular interest in a prisoner and trying to help him to get a job and adjust when he was discharged from prison. The council agreed that within the next three or four weeks as many council members as possible would visit the prison for about two hours one • afternoon to see in what way they could help.
