Obituary CAPT. W. WHITFIELD

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 15. Captain William Whitfield, a former senior captain of the Union Steam Ship Company, has died in Auckland. He was 73. Captain Whitfield was born in the Waikaka Valley, near Gore, the son of farming people. He. first went to sea in 1908 and for the first four years trained in a threemasted full-rigged sailing ship, the Dartford, Captain Whitfield spent 46 years at sea. During the First World War he commanded the hospital ship Maheno, and the Waltomo and Waihoro. In the Second World War he commanded the hospital ship Maungahui. Altogether he commanded about 30 of the company’s ships at different times in his career.

He was for many years master of the Aorangi.
