Ceremony At Paparua
In the first citizenship ceremony conducted by the Paparua County Council, seven persons from the district took the oath of allegiance and were presented with their certificates of naturalisation by the county chairman (Mr R. J. Roberts) on Monday evening. Mr Roberts welcomed as fellow citizens the newcomers to New Zealand. He congratulated ■ them on their choice of country and spoke of the privileges and responsibilities they were receiving. Also present at the meeting were' Mr M. A, Connelly, M.P., and Mrs Connelly, county councillors and their wives, guests of the candidates, and a representative of the Internal Affairs Department (Mr W. F. de Malmanche. The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr. Seath) sent a telegram of congratulation. Those who took the oath of allegience were:— Mr Engel Oorthuis, Mrs Hendrikje Oorthuias, Mr Bartholomeus Joseph Jan Krom (Dutch), Mrs Noreen Zillah Banks (South African), Mr William Kristian WohlertJensen (Danish), Mrs Bertha Wohlert-Jensen, Claus Hans Henrich ■ Wohlert-Jensen (Swiss).
—Hard Wood.—Wood impregnated with a liquid plastic and then exposed to atomic radiation becomes harder and absorbs moisture more slowly, research sponsored by the United States Atomic Energy Commission shows. Radiation with gamma rays from cobalt-60 combines the wood and plastic into a final product more resistant to blows and scratches, and to warping and swelling, than it was before.
