CONGESTION AT CORNERS
Council Plan For Relief
A scheme of the traffic committee to relieve traffic congestion at inner city intersections was approved by the City Council on Monday evening for a trail period. Congestion was caused at several intersections by motorists entering an intersection without having sufficient room beyond it to accommodate their vehicles, the committee said. Efforts had been made to have officers stationed at intersections to tell motorists they should not cause congestion to opposing traffic.
Some motorists had asked whether it would be possible tb indicate just bow much area of roadway should be kept to permit the passage of other vehicles. One of the worst intersections was the south-east part of Cathedral, square. There was a tendency for motorists to be held by the traffic lights and queues extending north over the intersection of the Square and Colombo street stopped vehicles wishing to proceed east to west across the Square. The committee said an area of roadway should be marked to indicate to motorists going south in Colombo street towards traffic lights that a portion of the roadway must be kept clear.
