NEW TRADE ROUTE

S. America To Australia

(N.Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright) SYDNEY. May 19 A direct shipping service will probably be operating between Australian and Latin American ports early next year, a Department of Trade official said yesterday. Mr W. S. Lowe, first assistant secretary of the Department of Trade said Australia could have sold 10,000 tons of cargo to South American countries in the last three months if there had been a regular shipping service. Mr Lowe was the Department of Trade’s representative on a trade mission to South America late last year. He said that Latin-Ameri-can countries were importing goods worth £A3.500m a year —about four times Australia’s total exports. Australia was supplying only a fraction of these. The Federal Government had conducted negotiations with shipping companies and has asked them to start regular services to South America.
