EDUCATION SPENDING

“Glad Cute Not Extended”

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 19. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nash) said today he was glad to see that the promised cuts in Government expenditure had not extended greatly in education. He was commenting on the

announcement by the Minister of Education (Mr Tennent) that the sum of £8.75 million had been allotted provisionally by the Government for the 1961-62 education building programme. The amount provided in the estimates by the Labour Government last year had been £9 million, Mr Nash said, but it had been expected that with increased university expenditure the amount required would have had to be increased. He would be interested in the details of the proposed expenditure when the estimates were brought down later in the year, he said. He considered that education. health, scientific research and avoidance of unemployment were four major items of expenditure which should not be reduced.
