Sanatorium At Waipiata
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 19. The Waipiata Sanatorium in Central Otago will be used as a borstal after it is closed as a sanatorium later this year. The Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan) and the Minister of Health (Mr Shelton) announced this in a joint statement tonight. Waipiata is 81 miles from Dunedin.
The Minister said the new borstal would help to relieve overcrowding at Waikeria and Invercargill borstals They said it might later become an "open" institution “When the institution becomes a borstal the inmates sent to Waipiata will be carefully selected." the Minister said.
“Those with records of violence and those who are thought to be in any way unsettled will not be considered for transfer.” The Ministers said the Justice Department would take over as many as possible oi the present staff at Waipiata who wanted to stay there.
