POLLUTION OF AIR

50,000 Deaths A Year (Special Crspat N.ZPji.) LONDON, May 17. Dirty air, smoke and dirt killed 50.000 persons each year in Britain, Mr Henry Brooke, Miriister of Housing and Local‘Government, said in Bristol. “It would seem an odd thing if men can traverse space and yet not be able to get rid of smoke and grime in everyday life. “We know nowadays how to get air clean, and the only question is whether we are willing to take the trouble.

“I say we must,” he added.

Chronic bronchitis killed 30,000 a year and caused the loss of 20 million working days. Recent research indicated that pollution of the air was one of the most serious causes of chronic bronchitis.

In the last 50 years lung cancer had developed at a frightening rate and now it killed more than 20.000 persons a year. Experiments with animals had shown that certain substances found in smoke from coal could produce cancer. This smoke must remain suspect as one of the causes of lung cancer
