Otway, the other New Zealander, had better luck and beat N. Mkerja, 4-6. 6-0, 6-3. 6-2, in a first round match. V. Schmidt, of Sweden, who was seeded No. 11, was beaten by a Venezuelan. I. Pimental, in the first round.
