HOLLYWOOD, May 17
The executive committee of the Professional Golfers’ Association has backed the sponsors of the Memphis open tournament in a ruling that could keep Gary Player (South Africa) and Arnold Palmer from competing in the Canada Cup matches in Puerto Rico early next month.
The association ruled that players committed to competition in the Memphis open tournament could not play in conflicting tournaments unless given a release by the Memphis sponsors. Both the Tennessee event and the Canada Cup matches will be played from June 1 to June 4. Both Palmer, the United States open champion, and the veteran, Sam Snead, had been nominated to defend the cup for the United States. The same pair won it at Portmarnock, Ireland, last year.
Player, the United States Masters Champion, was named to represent South Africa, The ruling could also affect Stan Leonard (Canada).
