SAFE DRIVING IN WINTER

Campaign To Start

Tomorrow

Safety when driving during winter is the theme of the latest Transport Department road safety campaign which will start tomorrow. Civic traffic authorities will co-operate with the department as they have done in the campaigns in March and April.

Factors to be emphasised during the campaign include visibility (clean windscreens), care on wet or icy roads (good tyres), distance between vehicles (especially on wet or icy roads), reduction of speed (especially at night), and road courtesy. All cyclists and pedestrians will be asked to make themselves visible, the former by ensuring that their cycles are correctly lit and the latter by wearing or carrying something white.

“Pedestrians must watch out when crossing roads because one of their most common mistakes Is thinking that the motorist can see them." said the district officer of the Transport Department (Mr D. L. Hogan).

The worst conditions of the winter, including fogs and icy roads had yet to come, he said.
