MERCY FLIGHT TO TOKELAUS

A Royal New Zealand Air Force Sunderland flying boat tonight began an 800-mile dash for Lauthala Bay. Fiji, to the Tokelau Islands in an effort to bring a critically ill woman to hospital.
The woman, wife of the Samoan medical practitioner at Fakaofa. is in need of urgent treatment. Tonight’s mission is the third the R.N.Z.A.F. has undertaken this month. The Tokelaus are New Zealand's northernmost dependencies. Western Samoa's resident high commissioner received word of the illness and requested assistance from the Air Force. The aircraft is expected to arrive at Fakaofa at dawn to. morrow, pick up the woman and fly her to the maritime aircraft alighting area at Satapaula. Western Samoa. From there the patient will be taken to hospital at Apia.
