PURGE IN PERSIA

Many Army Arrests

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON. May 17.

Teheran police last night were reported to have arrested 30 officials on charges of embezzlement as a result of the Army purge in Persia. The London “Daily Telegraph" reported from Teheran that charges were being made out against scores of other officials and arrests were continuing.

Among the names mentioned of the officials was a former chief of Teheran’s Military Court, General Azmou.

At a press conference today, the new Prime Minister (Dr.' Ali Amini) said he was proceeding slowly but surely “trying to avoid creating the impression that a revolution was in progress,” the “Daily Telegraph" reported. He was opposed to making a circus of the coming trials of the accused, as had happened in similar events in Turkey and Iraq. The fact that he had been able to round up so many senior officers proved that the Army was behind him, he said. More than 300 officers, including 35 generals, have been arrested in a sweeping reorganisation of the Army High Command in Persia. Dr. Amini said he intended to rule by decree for six months and probably longer.
