"In a world in which many issues are confused and allegiances are beir.g strained to breaking point, it is reassur.ng to reflect that the Victoria League, through its large membership and manifold activities, remains unshaken in its loyalties to the Crown and to the ideal of staunch fellowship of freedom within the British Commonwealth of Nations." says the president of the Victoria League in Canterbury (Mrs R B. Neill), in her annual report Special functions connected with the golden jubilee celebrations have included a reception, a ball and a garden party. Monthly morning-tea parties and bridge afternoons have also been held. Honoured guests entertained during the year have included Viscount and Viscountess Kilmuir. the Dowager Viscountess Hailsham. and, with other Commonwealth societies, the Duke of Devonshire A special jubilee-year event was the formation of a South Canterbury branch of She Victoria League, in ’imaru last October.
