City Council Vacancy-
sir.—The independent's withdrawing his nomination was an easy let-out for the Labour candidate as the onus was on the Labour Party to save the ratepayers the expense of a by-election. The onus in the first place was on the Citizens’ Association, which wisely decided not to enter the contest. Many now must wonder what would have happened if the independent had refused to withdraw. Would the Labour candidate have forced an election? The city must thank the Deputy-Mayor (Cr, H. P. Smith) for his publicspirited attitude in accomplishing a sensible settlement which saved £3ooo.—Yours, etc., RATEPAYER. May 16, 1961.
