POULTRY IN THAMES
Borough Council’s Strict Control
Strict conditions for backyard poultry keepers in the Thames borough have been set by the Thames Borough Council. Roosters are prohibited, the number of hens is limited and the construction, siting and maintenance of houses are also subject to control. No more than 12 birds maybe kept on a property of less than half an acre and borough poultry keepers will have to pay an annual fee of 10s. Hen houses are not allowed to be built less than 30ft from any house or building and must also be 10ft from the boundary. Their floor space must be a minimum of 40 square feet, or provide five square feet for each bird. No runs are allowed. Floors must be provided, and the walls must comply with the borough by-laws. The roofs must be rainproof. The houses must be cleaned out with insecticide every six months. These regulations must be complied with to the letter, but poultry keepers have been allowed six months’ grace until September 30. The by-laws are based almost entirely on regulajt’ons in force in the One Tree Hill Borough, in Auckland.
