University Seminar .Opens

Professor H. W. Rhodes discussed the medium of the novel in the opening address yesterday of a seminar being conducted by the English and Adult Education Departments of the University of Canterbury. The title for the whole seminar study is “The Nove) of Ideas ” About 30 persons are attending. Dr. R. A. Copland, in an afternoon address, talked about Benjamin Disraeli’s “Young England” trilogy—"Coningsby,” “Sybil” and “Tancred.” In the evening Dr. R. G Frean talked on Pater and religion. Today, D. H. Lawrence’s “Women in Love" will be discussed by Mr E B. Greenwood under the general title “The Keystone of the Arch.” Mr D J. O Caffin will discuss Huxley and “The Novel of Ideas ” He calls his lecture "Living with Monsters." There were two discussion periods yesterday and there will be two today. The seminar will end today.
