Six Dozen For University

An “order” from the University of Canterbury for aix dozen mutton birds was met yesterday within a few minutes by the Ashburton inspector for the S.P C A (Mr J R. Reeves). The request was made by Dr. B Stonehouse, a senior lecturer in the zoology department at the university after he learned of the deaths of thousands of the birds alone the east coast of the South Island. Mr Reeves collected the birds off Wakanui beach in a very short time yesterday “There were many live

birds sitting on the water jus( off the breakers,” Mr Reeves said. “Unfortunately, nothing can be done for them They get weaker and weaker until they drown.”
