SALVATION ARMY
Week’s Visit By N.Z. Leader
This week is to be a full one for many members of the Salvation Army in Christchurch. The leader of the Salvation Army in New Zealand (Commissioner Alfred J. Gilliard), accompanied by Mrs Gilliard, will commence an inspection and review of all Salvation Army activities today. Assisting Commissioner Gilliard at divisional headquarters will be the Youth Director for the Salvation Army in New Zealand (Brigadier Ernest Elliot).
After examining all records and statistics prepared by the Divisional Commander (Brigadier F. Searle) and his staff, Commissioner Gilliard will make an assessment of what the Salvation Army if accomplishing in the Can-terbury-Westland area. Tomorrow Commissioner Gilliard will discuss his findings with the field officers in councils to be held at Tyndale House. He will also address the Christchurch Christian Businessmen's Association at its lunch meeting. Social welfare and retired officers will join the council on Thursday morning in the Christchurch Citadel. In the evening Commissioner Gilliard will meet members of the Salvation Army in the Christchurch Citadel. On Friday, members of the Salvation Army will be on the streets of Christchurch to assist in the army’s annual street-day appeal. The Oxford Youth Hall, a reconstructed building largely erected by volunteer labour, will be opened by Commissioner Gilliard on Saturday afternoon. The Linwood Band will be in attendance, and afternoon tea will be served to the public Commissioner Gilliard will meet the lay leaders (local officers) of the army in meetings and conference on Sunday morning and afternoon in Jeliicoe Hall. That evening the local officers will join Commissioner Gilliard when he conducts a public meeting in the Christchurch Citadel.
