MOVE TO PLAY IN CITY

North Canterbury Senior Team

Efforts will be made to have the senior North Canterbury representative cricket team play in the Canterbury Cricket Association's competitions in Christchurch, if a special general meeting of club delegates approves a recommendation of the executive of the North Canterbury Cricket Sub-Association. The future of cricket in North Canterbury was discussed at a recent meeting of the executive, when all members considered the normal representative subassociation matches were not giving the top players sufficient incentive. Because of the apparent lack of interest by the other sub-associa-tions in suggestions that they should combine to form a minor association, it was proposed North Canterbury should form itself into a minor association. position Under ReviewDelegates reporting on the meeting of the minor and sub-associations with the Canterbury Cricket Association said the position of minor associations was under review by the New Zealand Cricket Council. In infonpal talks after the meeting -with the association it had been suggested by some officials that probably the best move North Canterbury could make at this stage would be to apply to have its senior representative team play in the senior grade of the Christchurch competitions. Several members of the executive said they realised there would be some problems that would have to be overcome. The meeting decided, however, to call a special general meeting of delegates for June 6, when the proposals would be placed fully before clubs. A motion will be submitted to the delegates asking that the executive be granted permission to begin negotiations with the Canterbury association. In the meantime members of the executive will be available to attend club meetings to explain in more detail the suggestions should any club request this.
