Motor-Racing Stirling Moss Wins Monaco Grand Prix

MONACO. May 14 Stirling Moss, of Britain, uon the Monaco Grand Prix today in a Lotus. Be took the lead after about 28 miles, and held off a strong challenge by the Ferrari team to win by about three seconds from R. Ginther (United States). Moss drove at an average speed of 70.7 miles an hour. The world champion Jack Brabham, Who lost three laps when he stopped in the pits after the 36th lap. retired before half way.
P. Hill (United States) in a Ferrari was third. Ginther also drove a Ferrari. New Zealand’s Bruce McLaren finished sixth. It was the second consecutive win tor Moss over the twisting 1.94-mile Monaco circuit and it put him in the lead as the battle for the 1961 world driving championship opened. Of the 16 drivers who started only 10 finished. In the final desperate pursuit of Moss during, the closing laps of the race, Ginther matched Moss’s lap record of Imin 36.35ec (73.13 miles an hour). Moss was waving as he flashed over the finish line. The crowd gave him an ovation and the band broke into “God Save the Queen.” Moes told a radio announcer after the race: “It was a great race because 1 won it.”
