SAMOAN MADE CHIEF IN AUCKLAND

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, May 15. The unusual ceremony by which Samoans confer the title of chief on one of their number was seen for the first time outside Samoa in Auckland on Saturday afternoon. Chiefs among the Samoan community in Auckland gathered in the hall of the Pacific Islanders’ Congregational Church, to make Lokeni, a carpenter, one of them. With native mats covering the floor the chiefs sat in a semi-circle to hear first the minister of the church, the Rev. L. I. Sio, speak of and pray for the chief-to-be. The climax of the ceremony came as Lokeni took

the cup ot kava and drank, by that act becoming Chief Pulotu, with the right to take his place in the meetings of chiefs. Each chief drank and spoke briefly. Then the retiring chief, now having attained the privileged position of orator as Tivoli Onofia, made the customary distribution of money to each of those chiefs present. Finally chiefs and relatives of Chief Pulotu sat down to a Samoan feast.
