SHIPPING FROM EUROPE
New Service To South Island
Advice of a new direct shipping service from Europe to New Zealand was received by the council of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association last evening in a letter from A. R. Guthrey and Com-] pany, Ltd., saying that it had been appointed agents for the new service. By not calling at United Kingdom ports the new service would save seven to 10 days on the voyage from Europe, the letter said. Mr C H. Stockbridge said that manufacturers like himself in the clothing industry “get quite a bit from Europe.” He said he had been alarmed recently to hear that a shipping service to Lyttelton through Suva had been withdrawn. Future sailings would be fortnightly from London, with Auckland the first New Zealand port of call and then Lyttelton. “It looks as though we are now to have no direct shipping service to Lyttelton at all. “As far as the clothing trade is concerned the fact that ships call at Auckland before coming to Lyttelton is a great disadvantage to the clothing trade. It calls for a redoubling of our efforts to see what we can do to rectify the situation,” he said.
