Picton Still Aground

An attempt to pull the Southern Cross Shipping Company’s motor-vessel Picton off a sand spit on the north bank of the Waimakariri river about a quarter of a mile from the bar, failed at high tide about 5.30 p.m yesterday. Another attempt will be made today at high tide. A wire rope will be fastened to the ship, and a bulldozer will try to winch it off the spit where it has been stranded since Friday evening. On Sunday and yesterday, trucks and trailers took cargo off the Picton. More than half the cargo has been taken off, but the remainder will be left aboard until after the refloating attempt is made today.
