Sir Edmund Hillary

New Zealanders in all walks of life will sympathise with Sir Edmund Hillary in his illness, and wish him a speedy convalescence. Mountaineers especially will appreciate the disappointment caused him by his withdrawal from the attempt on Makalu, the world’s fifth highest mountain. For years Sir Edmund Hillary appears to have been fascinated by this mountain, in the extraordinary way that many climbers are drawn to one

particular peak. Although after Everest he might well have contented himself with his achievements, it is not in Hillary’s nature to prefer a safe or easy life. His countrymen will hope that neither his vigour nor his rare capacity for leadership will be impaired; for no New Zealander has done more in recent times to keep alive the spirit of adventure and endeavour in a nation beset by all the temptations of material prosperity and physical ease.
